Children

·        St. George’s Preschool

St. George’s Preschool was established in 1969 as an extension of the ministry of the church.  The purpose of the school is to provide a half-day program for children ages three to five.  The staff creates a positive environment that encourages each child to develop a healthy self-concept.  St. George’s Preschool provides a warm and nurturing atmosphere in which emotional, social, physical and intellectual growth takes place.  Within appropriate boundaries, individual choice is encouraged to allow all children to participate actively and learn about the world around them.

·        Sunday School

Sunday school is for children ages 4-12.  It meets every Sunday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the spacious community room called Lower Softely Hall. The children work and play together, the older ones aiding and guiding the younger ones.  Teenagers often join the group, acting as junior teachers.  Activities include opening prayers, songs and games, Bible stories, ad craft projects.  The curriculum is based on the guidebook “Living the Good News”, a lectionary based program developed especially for Episcopalians.

Two adult teachers guide the children in their lessons, and then lead them into the main sanctuary to take Holy Communion with their parents.  Sunday school provides children with lessons and projects appropriate for their age, as well as an opportunity to take part is the larger church service.  Contact Tassie Russell for more information

 ·        Child Care

Child care by two licensed professionals is offered for babies and younger children in our nursery (the “Blue Door” across the breezeway from church) from 9:45—11:15.

 ·       Liturgical Dance

Caroline Broes, who teaches at Ballet Petit and is a member of our church, offers dance classes and recitals for younger children here in Lower Softley Hall.  Some of the children from the class and from the church occasionally perform in Sunday worship services, doing interpretive dance to the reading of the Gospel, or some other form of creative dance expression.

 ·         Library for Children

The Children’s Collection of the church Library consists of videos, DVDs, and books about life lessons in story form.  We encourage parents to reinforce their children’s spiritual growth through use of these resources at home.  The library is open on Sunday mornings, with a cart of special recommendations rolled out onto the patio during coffee hour.
